US President Donald Trump has faced backlash from certain Catholic groups following the release of an AI-generated image depicting him as the Pope.
The image, disseminated through official White House social media channels, emerges as Catholics grieve the passing of Pope Francis, who died on April 21 and brace themselves for the selection of the next pontiff.
The New York State Catholic Conference has leveled accusations against Trump, claiming he has ridiculed the faith. Just days after making a light-hearted remark to reporters, stating, “I’d like to be Pope,” the post was shared.
Trump joins a list of presidents who have faced accusations of undermining the Catholic faith. Former US President Joe Biden sparked controversy a year ago when he was seen making the sign of the cross at a pro-abortion access rally in Tampa, Florida.
During a briefing with journalists on Saturday, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni refrained from addressing inquiries regarding Trump’s recent post. The Vatican is set to commence a conclave on Wednesday to elect a successor to Pope Francis.
On Friday night, Trump shared an image of himself clad in a white cassock and a pointed miter, attire typically associated with a bishop. A large cross hangs around his neck as he raises a finger, his expression marked by solemnity.
The New York State Catholic Conference, representing the bishops of New York, criticized the image on X.
The group disapproved, stating, “There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President.”
In a moment of profound mourning, the world reflects on Pope Francis’s recent burial. The cardinals are now preparing to convene in a solemn conclave, tasked with the significant responsibility of electing a new successor to St. Peter. We ask that you refrain from mocking us.
Matteo Renzi, the former Prime Minister of Italy with a left-leaning stance, criticized Trump’s recent post.
Renzi expressed his discontent with X, stating, “This image offends believers, insults institutions, and illustrates how the leader of the right-wing world revels in clownish behavior.”
The White House dismissed any implications that the Republican president was mocking the papacy.
“President Trump traveled to Italy to honor Pope Francis and participate in his funeral, demonstrating his unwavering support for Catholics and the cause of religious liberty,” stated press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
